Obituary of Joseph "Joel" Burks

Joseph Lee Burks (Joel), 40 years old, Killen, AL, passed quietly from this life on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 surrounded by his loved ones. He was a member of Lone Cedar Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his grandparents J.W. and Willodean Burks, and Gaynell and Alma Bretherick. He is survived by his parents Joe and Kay Burks; his brother Jamie (Ragan) Burks; nephew Collin Burks and niece Lottie Grace Burks. Joel was an employee of Verizon Wireless for 13 years as a service technician. He enjoyed Alabama football, being a D.J. and playing music. His greatest love was his nephew Collin and his niece Lottie Grace and his little dog Bella. Visitation will be Friday, November 8 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Lone Cedar Church of Christ. The funeral will follow immediately with Brother Tim Grigsby and Brother Greg Dial officiating. Burial will follow at the Lone Cedar Cemetery. The family wishes to thank Tim Grigsby and the church family for all their love and support throughout Joel's illness. We would also like to thank Dr. Matthews, Dr. McAnally, and Dr. Shukla at Helen Keller Hospital and the nurses from PCU and ICU, Susan Grimmett, Haley Bradford, Grace McLendon and Sonia McMurtrey for their care and support during his stay there. Pallbearers will be John McCombs, John Passarella, Josh Ingrum, Todd Hess, Doug Carmack, Dax Elkins, and Nicholas Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Joey Hess, John Bennett, Brian Flowers and Jason Flowers. Greenhill Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
