Obituary of Jr. Evers

Oscar Bernard Evers, Jr., beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on December 1, 2012 at the age of 90. Mr. Evers was born on February 12, 1922 and exemplified all of the qualities of the "Greatest Generation" including humility, hard work, and a strong and enduring love of God, country and family, which he taught to his children and grandchildren by example. Mr. Evers was a devout Catholic and a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Loretto, Tennessee for his entire life. He served his country admirably as a corporal and army medic in World War II entering the service on November 11, 1942 where he saw action in the Pacific theatre (Anguar, Peleliu and the Phillipines) and was a part of the initial troops that entered Tokyo in 1945 after the war ended. He was discharged from the army on December 25, 1945. Back in the states, he went to work for the Tennessee Valley Authority at Muscle Shoals, Alabama in 1946 and worked there for 40 years until his retirement in 1986. Mr. Evers's formal education ended with grade school since he was needed on the family farm. However, he was blessed with an innate intelligence and common sense which allowed him to reach the level of Supervisor at TVA, a position that was filled by two Engineers with college degrees after he retired. Mr. Evers was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was the primary caregiver for his lovely wife of 56 years, Mrs. Ruby Collier Evers, and devoted his life to caring for her during her 15 year struggle with Alzheimer's disease. During this time, he exhibited great inner strength, compassion and patience which was a real inspiration to his family and all who came in contact with him. As a hobby and a second source of income, Mr. Evers raised cattle which funded his children's education. He was quite proud of the fact that he put his two children entirely through college and medical school and they never had to take out a single loan to pay for their education. Mr. Evers is preceded in death by his wife who passed away in 2011, his parents, Oscar Joseph and Theresa Bauer Evers, and five brothers and two sisters. He is survived and will be greatly missed by his two children, son Dr. Mark Evers and wife Karen of Lexington, KY; daughter Dr. Ann Evers Smith and husband Dr. Gary Smith of Nashville, TN; and three grandchildren Lauren, Ben and Clem. He is also survived by sisters Bernadine Hollman, Dorothy Eckl and Theresa Wenzel and brother Cyril Evers. Visitation for Mr. Evers will be Monday, December 3, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00pm at Greenhill Funeral Home with a Prayer service and rosary at 7:00pm. The funeral mass will be Tuesday at 11am at Loretto Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery. Father Tomy P. Joseph and Deacon Sam Beckman will be officiating.
