Please share a memory of Justine to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Justine Doster Stutts was born on Rhea Branch in rural Giles County, TN, outside of Campbellsville, on November 25, 1922. She had a twin brother, James Justin Doster who passed away in 2014. Her parents were James Jasper (Jim) Doster and Mary Ida Johnson Doster, both school teachers. Besides her twin brother, she had an older brother, William Lewis Doster and three older sisters, Matte Pearl Marable, Thelma D. Myrick, and Nelle Noell. She was the last surviving sibling. She and all of the brothers and sisters were teachers. When she and her brother were five, the family moved to Murfreesboro, TN, so all of the children could attend college. Ms. Stutts graduated from Middle Tennessee State Teachers College, majoring in Business Education and became a typing and shorthand teacher following the career of two of her older sisters. Her first teaching job was at Loretto High School as she substituted for Thelma Myrick for three years. She then became a teacher in Smithville followed by a job with the State of Tennessee as an administrative assistant. Ms. Stutts married Lee Alison Stutts in Nashville in 1953 and they moved to Oak Ridge where she worked for what is now the Oak Ridge National Labs. She and her husband returned to Loretto in 1964 where both taught at Loretto High School. Mr. Stutts passed away in 1970. Ms. Stutts continued to teach until retirement at Loretto in 1985. She and her sister taught typing and shorthand at Loretto for well over 50 years. Mrs. Stutts was a member of the Loretto Church of Christ for over 50 years and a third generation member of churches of Christ. She stayed active with her church until she entered Lauderdale Christian Nursing Home in 2014. In addition to her large spiritual family, she is survived by a sister-in-law, Bettye Doster, seven nieces and nephews, David Boone Marable, Justin A. Myrick Sr., Justine M. Gooch, James E. Myrick, Mary Coyla (Coy) Richardson, Dana Luton, and Jan Bennett, and 17 great nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Monday, June 27, from 11:00-1:00pm at Greenhill Funeral Home, with the service following at 1:00pm with Eddie Gooch officiating. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Methodist Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Eddie Gooch, Jim Gooch, Bob Gooch, Devin Gooch, Darby Gooch, Garrett Killen, Anthony Gooch, Brody Gooch, and Alexis Gooch. Honorary Pallbearers will be Gary Russ, Richard Rohling, Justin Myrick, Don Killen, and Travis Ellis. Greenhill Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
